Challenge for young St Albans go-getters

TEAMS of young entrepreneurs from across St Albans will be vying to use their business skills for good causes in a challenge from the Council for Voluntary Services.

Sixth-formers from schools including Nicholas Breakspear, Sir John Lawes, St Columba’s , St George’s and Verulam will be advised by a "dragon" from the local business community on how to make the best of an initial investment of £100 in the Dragon's Apprentice contest.

In last year’s competition, three teams from St Columba’s raised £2,445 for Home-Start, Herts Young Homeless Group and St Albans Volunteer Centre.

Organiser Penny Mortimer said: "We are delighted that we have been able to extend the Dragon’s Apprentice to schools across St Albans and Harpenden this year.

"With the help of our dragons and charities, the teams will get a real opportunity to deal with business people and finance, form their own strategies and see them through.

”The teams may raise money in any way they choose as long as they prepare a clear plan stating their business ideas and how they aim to reach their target.

"All profits will go directly to the chosen charities and the schools will present their results to a panel of judges at the awards night at the University of Hertfordshire in March 2011.

"The winning team will also get the offer of work experience at the University of Hertfordshire."

Anyone interested in joining the challenge should email wendy@cvsstalbans.org.uk.
