TWO councillors been vocal in their support for Welwyn Garden City's 90th anniversary celebrations.

Steve Markiewicz, Welwyn Garden City south, and Malcolm Cowan, Handside and Peartree, have donated a total of £2,000 towards workshops and concerts for the Vociferous Project.

Vociferous is an Austrian jazz choir which joined forces with the Welwyn Garden City singers to perform 'A song for Welwyn Garden' specially written by local composer Veryan Weston.

First performed at a concert at St Francis' Church in the summer, 'A song for Welwyn' is being recorded and will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3's Jazz on November 3.

The councillors cash boost will help towards administration costs and organising a programme of local afternoon workshops and an evening concert.

Councillor Cowan said: "We are keen to encourage as many people as possible to discover the pleasures of choral singing.

“As this year is Welwyn Garden City's 90th anniversary, we felt it was a unique opportunity to support projects like this which engage and enrich our local community."

Mr Weston added: "The St Francis concert was a very special occasion. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the 90th birthday of Welwyn Garden City with the Townspeople's Choir and community of local singers from many faiths, as well as an exuberant drum orchestra consisting of drummers originally from many parts of Africa - a great example of the town's cultural diversity."
