We have just had the most enjoyable afternoon. It was our annual staff awards where dedication and service by our staff over the last twelve months were recognised. The fabulous Linda Robson, currently appearing as Fairy Organic in Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime at the Watersmeet Theatre in Rickmansworth did the “…and the winner is…” bit and was just fantastic. We had everything from the employee of the year, team of the year, unsung hero of the year, volunteer of the year and some special awards like the Golden Commode award (yes, we’re now descending into toilet humour – "oh no we’re not": "oh yes we are" – sorry got carried away with the panto theme!) and special awards for special individuals. I think today’s (Friday 10 December) edition of the Watford Observer will have some pictures – have a look. Of course, hospitals are not overwhelmingly happy places to be in as most of our patients are pretty ill. However, it was very satisfying to hear how staff had often gone that extra mile to do something more for the people in their care.

There was no alcohol at these awards and even so, we all had a memorable time. Would it have been any better with a drink? Some people may think so, and in some ways I would agree it’s sometimes perceived as more sociable, but it’s not needed to have a good time. We are entering that part of the year where there are many parties to attend, often with much wine and good cheer to accompany them. Please be aware of the dangers of excessive drinking and please don’t be the subject of one of the stories I hear next year at our staff awards. It’s heartening to hear the miraculous tales of experienced dedicated staff battling against the odds to put lives back together again – for the sake of that extra drink, don’t let it be you we’re working on.
