AN artist from St Albans who began his career selling work on market stalls is celebrating five years since the opening of his own business.
Ben Askem started up Original Canvases in High Street showcasing his own works of art for sale.
The 33-year-old, who was born in Watford, said his inspiration comes from family members who worked in the field.
After studying at art colleges where he gained his diploma Ben sold his work through markets and other galleries before setting up Original Canvases in 2006.
To celebrate the landmark five years for his business Ben is holding a late opening on Thursday, April 7.
He said: “I've just always been into art and I'd always come back to it whatever path I seem to take.
“There's been a lot of hard work involved over the years and it's great to have my own business, selling my own work rather than selling through other galleries – it just cuts out that middle man.”
Ben's latest collection is art on metal which he calls 'reflection'. The pieces of art showcase iconic places like London capturing some of his childhood memories.
He added: “On April 7 I just want to let people come in and celebrate with me and have a look at what I do.”
