A BOXING club in St Albans will be given a much-needed revamp following a £700 donation.

Two county councillors - Aislinn Lee, St Stephens, and Bernard Lloyd, Harpenden north east - have awarded St Albans Boxing Gym £500 and £200 respectively from their locality budgets.

The cash will help to pay for improvements including the renewal of the heating system, and replacement of the floor and roof. The gym has members of the community of all ages, including many from disadvantaged backgrounds. It runs sessions for women and girls and sessions for children only.

Councillor Lee said: “Clubs like the St Albans Boxing Gym play an important role in the life of our towns and deserve our support whenever we’re in a position to offer it.

"As well as promoting fitness and a healthy, active lifestyle, they benefit the wider community by engaging young people who may have a history of antisocial behaviour and getting them involved in training in a structured, disciplined environment.”

Councillor Lloyd echoed the views.
