A BEDROOM went up in flames after a teenage girl left a candle burning on her windowsill while she had a shower.
It is thought the curtains caught fire from flames from the candle, before quickly spreading to the rest of the room.
St Albans firefighters were called to the fire in Firwood Avenue, St Albans, at 8.30pm on Sunday.
The family of four, who had been alerted by their smoke alarm, tried to put out the flames using a dry powder extinguisher and a bucket of water.
Fire crews arrived to find them outside the house.
After ensuring the fire was out, two firefighters ventilated the house using a high pressure fan.
