OPEN days will be held at the new city centre school in St Albans for prospective parents next month.

The Alban City free school, which will be located in the former University of Law building in Hatfield Road, was given the green light from the Department for Education last week.

The proposals were put forward by a group made up of local parents and a former St Albans headteacher and is supported by Hertfordshire County Council.

It is hoped the school will open in September 2012 and will provide 60 reception places next year, and another 60 each year thereafter.

The school will address a long-running problem of the shortage of primary school places in the city centre.

Critics, who agree with the need for a school, have slammed the location which is already gridlocked with traffic. The council, however, said most of the places will be taken by city centre pupils, which will not create additional traffic.

The open days will be held on the following days:

  • Tuesday, November 1 – 9.30am, 11.30am and 2pm
  • Monday, November 7 – 8pm
  • Saturday, November 19 – 10am, 12pm, 3pm
  • Monday, November 28 – 11am, 1.30pm
  • Thursday, December 8 – 8pm
