Harpenden was brimming with festive spirit yesterday as families descended in their droves to enjoy the annual Christmas carnival.

The town was packed with scores of visitors, who browsed stalls, had a go on funfair rides and enjoyed the entertainment.

The carnival kicked off at noon with a Christmas Farmers’ Market selling hot mulled wine, mince pies and other treats.

Talented singers from the Grove School Junior Choir, Harpenden Rock Choir and the Harpenden Gang Show gave polished performances on a stage in Church Green.

The magic of Christmas came alive for youngsters who visited Santa’s grotto in Thompsons Close, while nearby carol singers performed dressed in period costumes.

A procession took place in the High Street which drew crowds.

The cast of the Alban Arena pantomime Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, who are due to start their rehearsals in the next few days, were among those who took part.

Singer and actress Toyah Willcox, who plays the evil queen in the show, said they had received a great reception from people.

She said: “It’s been lovely today. People love pantomime. With lives being so tough at the moment, there’s something so positive about pantomime.”

In the evening the lights were switched on by the town's Mayor Michael Weaver, with help from the panto cast.

Debbie and Chris Denley, from Roundwood Lane, Harpenden, said: “We try and come every year. It’s been very busy, lots of people have turned up. A lot of effort has gone into organising it.”

Councillor Teresa Heritage (Harpenden South West) had allocated £2,300 of her locality budget to updating the town’s Christmas lights. The money paid for six feature trees in the High Street and additional lights in Station Road.

At the recent Voice Your Choice participatory budget scheme, run by the town council, updating the town’s lights was the fourth most popular project.
