Duathlon and triathlon courses test athletes' mettle

FITNESS enthusiasts can now go the extra mile for charity by signing up to the Herts Charity Challenge -triathlon and duathlon.

Official entries for the St Albans-based event open this week, with 350 places up for grabs and all money raised going to the international children’s charity Hope and Homes for Children.

This year, to mark the event’s tenth anniversary, a new duathlon course has been added alongside the triathlon circuit. The aim is to help aspiring triathaletes get a taste for the sport.

The events begin around 7am on Sunday, October 14, at the St Albans Nuffield Fitness & Wellbeing Centre.

Competitors for the triathlon will set off for a 400 metre swim, before tackling a 21 kilometre cycle ride, and a five kilometre road run.

Duathlon entrants will start with a five kilometre run, followed by a 21 kilometre bike ride and then another five kilometre run.

Registration for both events is £15 and they are open to novices and veterans alike. All competitors are asked to raise a minimum of £485 for Hope and Homes for Children - a charity which transforms harmful and outdated childcare practices in Central and Eastern Europe and Africa.

Entry is open to anyone over the age of 15 and competitors can take part as individuals or in teams of three or four.
