A scheme encouraging people to explore the River Ver in St Albans has been shortlisted for a Mayor’s Pride Award for Community Project of the Year.

The Discover the River Ver Project involves eight circular walks around the river and its surrounding countryside.

The River Ver has played a part in the community for thousands of years, and it supported a watercress industry and many watermills during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Andy Webb, chairman of the Ver Valley Society, said: “The River Ver is a chalk stream, one of only about 200 on the planet. It has a rich history and its pure alkaline water supports a very particular mix of flora and fauna."

Mr Webb will be leading the Redbournbury Walk, which does not require booking, on Sunday, March 4, at 10.30am. It consists of a six-mile circular walk from Redbourn Common with the chance to visit the only remaining mill at Redbournbury, now a museum and bakery.

Mr Webb said: “The walk will give you a chance to get close to the river, even crossing it on stepping stones, and get great views down the valley.”

The Community Project of the Year Award will be announced at a ceremony at the Alban Arena on April 26 and volunteers are welcome to attend.
