PLANS for a car wash in Wheathampstead have been branded an "eyesore" by villagers.

An application has been submitted to St Albans District Council for a section of Wheathampstead Social Club's car park to be temporarily used as a car wash and valeting centre.

Local residents claim it would have a negative impact on the village and those living close to the club in Lower Luton Road and Kingfisher Close.

Commenting on the proposals villagers say the signs would have a detrimental impact on the conservation area, particularly the heritage trail.

Many say when the Wheathampstead Dance Academy holds events at the club cars already spill out onto neighbouring residential streets. It is proposed the car wash will take up six of the current 53 spaces.

Other objections relate to the operating hours of 8am to 7pm Monday to Saturday and the potential increase in traffic.

Wheathampstead and District Preservation Society also object to the car wash plans and in their consultation response state: "The site is immediately adjacent to the village conservation area, and it is important that the signage is in keeping with the conservation requirements of the area.

"Current signage is inappropriate and not in keeping with the proximity of the beautiful village."

Wheathampstead Parish Council is also against the plans.

It is proposed the car wash will be sited at the car park for a temporary period of three years and a timber shed will also be built.

The application is due to be discussed by St Albans District Council's planning committee on Monday, May 28.
