Residents are expected to line the streets on Saturday as Redbourn’s own version of the Olympic torch makes its way through the town.

More than 70 people have been nominated to carry the flame during its journey around the village.

Beccy Follett is one of the 73 residents who will have the honour of taking part in the relay, which will start at the recreation centre.

She said: "Any opportunity we can offer to bring everybody together is just invaluable.

"I absolutely love the village.

"We are lucky enough to be part of a really great community."

A competition was held across all the schools and children’s groups in Redbourn to design a torch and mascot for the event.

The winning torch design is currently being made into a full size model that will be carried around the town on Saturday morning.

Ms Follett, who is also a member of the committee organising the relay, added: "If the weather is kind to us it should be a nice day.

"It will be great. It is the spirit of the thing."

The torch is due to reach its final destination on the common at 12.30pm where the participants will be given a medal to remember the day.

Following the ceremony the village’s Scouts will hold their annual summer fair.

The relay will kick-start the Olympic and Paralympic celebrations which will include a sports week at schools and a fun day.

The official opening ceremony for the London 2012 games will be shown on a big screen at the recreation centre.
