Two St Albans Girlguiding leaders nominated for Community Gold Award

TWO members of St Albans Girlguides who juggle their full time jobs as well as providing a fun and educating environment for the district's youngsters have been nominated in the Review's search for unsung heroes.

Chloe Halfhide and Jo Swanston have been put forward for a Community Gold Award – a scheme which is run in conjunction with local solicitors Debenhams Ottaway.

Pippa Pearson, who contacted the Review about the pair, said their hard work and determination is visible in the highly successful Guide and Rainbow unit which they run.

She said one of their recent successes includes the launch of the centenary of Girlguiding. Jo and Chloe masterminded the whole event which was held on the grounds of Marlborough School.

They organised cheerleaders, street dancers, stilt walkers and traditional campfire singing.

Pippa said she commends their dedication to Girlguiding as they both have full time jobs and family commitments too.

Speaking about being nominated 31-year-old Chloe told the Review: “I don't think we ever expected to be nominated.

“Both Jo and I do it because it's something we enjoy doing. It is definitely rewarding and the kids love it and have pride in taking part. We are very honoured to be nominated.”

Chloe has been involved in the youth group since she was 16-year-old starting off as a young leader , then she was a Brownies leader for two years then a Rainbow leader for ten years.

The former St Albans resident, who now lives in Ware, added: “It is rewarding because when see the girls develop so much between the ages of five and seven, it's really nice to think that you might have a small part in that.”

As well as being the Commissioner for the North St Albans District, a role in which she supports adults in other units, Chloe runs the Rainbows Unit at Bernard's Heath School.
