A COLLEGE tutor who led his students while they helped an elderly couple re-build their garden wall after they were conned by a rogue builder has joined the pensioners in nominating the youths for a Community Gold Award.
John and Kathleen Turner, of Ladies Grove, have nominated the Oaklands College construction students who cleaned up a trail of mess left by the builder who ran off with £800 of the couple's money.
The Review's reward scheme aims to give recognition to the unsung heroes of the district and is run in conjunction with St Albans solicitors Debenhams Ottaway.
Andy Rosser who supported the students while they carried out the work said: “This has been an excellent experience for my learners. Everyone thoroughly appreciated the real life, hands-on experience they got from building Mr and Mrs Turner’s wall.
“The students knew that the couple had been conned by a rogue builder and felt really good doing something for the community. It has definitely boosted their self-esteem, confidence and motivation.”
One of the students, Dominic Meaton, who helped to build the wall, added: “It feels really good that I have come to college to learn a trade but have also been able to help someone out in this way.”
