THE Review revealed sensational plans by local GPs to re-open Harpenden’s Red House Hospital, controversially closed a year before in the teeth of massive opposition. The Sun Lane site needs work costing £250,000 but GP Dylan Phillips said he was confident local support would propel the project towards reality. He said: “A phoenix can rise from the ashes. It’s taken a while to get to this stage but the next steps should follow a lot quicker. The hospital holds a lot of value for local people – we need the help and support of local people now.”

BY early September the collapsing economy had unleashed a flood of home repossessions engulfing the St Albans district. The Review revealed how no fewer than 142 homes in the district had been seized by building societies in the first six month of the year, with the rate accelerating as the headlines became ever more doom-laden. Lesley Gordon of St Albans Citizens Advice Bureau said: “The pressure is great, especially as mortgage costs go up.” MP Anne Main warned: “St Albans has lots of young people who may lose their homes. This causes other problems and puts strain on relationships.”

ON May 7, the ruling Lib Dem group defied the national surge in Tory support to tighten its grip on St Albans District Council by gaining one seat overall in a local election. Relieved council leader Robert Donald told the Review: “Now we have the majority we will be able to start implementing our manifesto.” Labour did not win a single seat, taking a mere 12.6 per cent of the vote.
