Following the devastating news that the Conservative led County Council have approved the construction of a giant incinerator on Hatfield green belt land, the fight has started to overturn the decision.
Solicitors representing the New Barnfield Action Fund, have written to the National Planning Casework Unit detailing reasons that the monstrous incinerator application should be called-in by the Secretary of State for Communities so it may be considered by an Inspector.
The New Barnfield Action Fund includes: MP Grant Shapps, WH Borough Council, Hatfield Town Council, North Mymms Green Belt Society and Hatfield Against Incineration.
In brief, they believe the incinerator application should be called in because:

1. It will take up 12 Hectares of Green Belt land
2. It runs contrary to the Herts Waste Core Strategy Green Belt Policy
3. The proposal relies on unsustainable quantities of waste production
4. It conflicts with national policies on reducing carbon emissions
5. It is not known if it conflicts with the Herts Waste Site Allocations document
6. It conflicts with UK legislation for the protection of endangered species
7. It has caused significant local controversy with 6,300 letter of objection

Further objections were submitted by the WelHat Borough Council, Hertsmere BC, St.Albans City District Council, English Heritage, Herts Biological Records Centre, Ramblers Association, Herts Garden trust and Campaign to Protect Rural England.

One aspect of the Town & Country Planning Act requires that, applications can be called-in when “…issues of more than local importance are involved”
