A controversial scheme to replace the former Herts County Supplies stores and offices in Mount Pleasant Lane with up to 116 new homes took a step closer last week as demolition contractors began clearing the site. Local residents have long been against the scheme as they fear a 'rat run' will be created through the Ryde estate and past the primary school there of the same name. The developer, Persimmon Homes, has also been criticised by borough councillors for their designs and are looking at amendments. One concern is that new homes will overlook existing properties on The Ryde. A public consultation of the revised plans is expected shortly.
