A headteacher who has been described as the driving force behind significant changes at a school in London Colney has been named as the winner of this month’s Inspiring People Award.
Lisa Valla was nominated by staff and students at London Colney Primary School for the award, which was launched by the Review newspaper in partnership with local solicitors Debenhams Ottaway to recognise unsung heroes across the district.
February’s winner, who has been headteacher at the school for five years, spoke of her shock at being chosen.
She said: “I don’t feel that I do anything more than any other head teacher out there.
“It is a wonderful job and I love doing it. I love the differences that you can make as a headteacher.”
Earlier this year an OFSTED inspector described Mrs Valla as “the driving force behind the significant changes and innovations” at the school.
After having a bad experience at school, and leaving with just two O-Levels, she was determined to create a positive environment for children.
She said: “To be in a position now to inspire children to believe that they can become whatever they want to be is great for me – it is what I went into teaching for.
“It is one of the best things that I could be known for.”
The awards recognise those who have been an inspiration to young people.
