A TOUCH of oriental proved a gastronomic winner when Thai Square was crowned St Albans cafe & restaurant of the year.

The restaurant in George Street must have struck a rapport with our mystery diner's tastebuds as it was voted the best of 22 other nominated eating houses. But picking a winner was by no means easy for the committee which also shortlisted Lussman's in Waxhouse Gate and Saba Restaurant in Heritage Close.

The award was presented to the victorious restaurant at the awards evening on Monday night. Owner Haim Danous, said : "We have only been open for six months.

"It's very difficult to settle down in that time - usually it takes about six months to a year to get it right.

"I'm very thankful to the St Albans community for having us and hopefully we will be even better next year.

"Unfortunately a lot of my staff are not fluent in English, but this award will bring us closer to the community and we can give them some enjoyment of Thai hospitality."
