Second slice of success for butchers

THE OVERALL winners of Retailer of the Year 2008 A & C Meats delighted in a second slice of success at this year's event by holding on to its Food and Drink retailer award.

The reigning champions of the Food and Drink category refused to be knocked off the top spot, winning the title for a second year running at the gala evening at the Alban Arena last night.

The Butchers and delicatessen in Catherine Street fought off four other shortlisted shops Olio and Farina, Santinos, Hotel Chocolat and JK Palmers to keep a hold of the award, sponsored by St Albans District Council.

Partners Alan Napier and Carl Hatfull, both from St Albans, were handed the award by Sandra Oldfield, from the St Albans District Chamber of Commerce.

Carl, who has worked with Alan for 36 years, said: "We were overall winners last year so we are extremely delighted to have won a category this year -we were not expecting it.

"We have not changed anything, we trade how we trade.

"The fact that a mystery shopper thought we deserved the award is great.

"We are a traditional butchers offering people quality and a service with a smile.

"It is important in this tough economic climate that people support their local businesses. Small shops offer better value for money and we understand our customers."
