Nottinghamshire miners who were on strike in 1984/5 returned to St Albans on Wednesday night [26 March], to commemorate the strike’s 30th anniversary with members of the St Albans Notts Miners’ Support Group. During the year-long strike, the group raised over £32,000 in cash and £1,0000 worth of food, shared among all the pits in South Notts.

Out cycling with a friend and spotted these two guys (sorry, don't know their names) putting up an information board naming the three sheet steel portraits on the Upper Lea Valley Way. If you've ever wondered who the figures are: Eric Morecambe who lived in Harpenden and supported Luton football club; Capability Brown who remodelled Luton Hoo landscape in the 18th century; and a member of the 1st Luton Sea Scouts. Great viewpoint overlooking the valley. Sorry, don't know any more, but thought you might be interested.

This is a disgrace! The council are saying our car parks are on average a 50% empty! No wonder over 60 shops have shut locally in the last year. The council needs to cut the cost of parking & introduce free parking to encourage shoppers. This council is anti business! − fight ratesCity car parks with spare capacity 'good news' »
It is strange that a company would invest in what looks to me like an expensive shop refit & then close within a few months. Especially as they are expanding the company & opening new stores nationally. It must be that the landlord is asking too much rent, together with the highest business rates in the world that have gone up for the last 22 years in a row. Landlords, the Government & the council have to reduce rent, rates & parking charges or shops will leave this city. − fight ratesBargain store closes down »
