88 determined golfers braved the horrendous Monday weather at Harpenden Common Golf Club to take part in the first Golf day in support of St Albans based Watling View School, which is a special school for 90 students with severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties. The event has thus far raised an impressive £8,500 for the school.
22 teams had signed up for the day, and they were not dissuaded by the overnight storms that had left puddles on the greens by early morning. However as the torrential rains eased the fast drying greens reappeared with a little encouragement from hard working staff at Harpenden Common Golf Club.
The golf tournament was followed by a delicious dinner in the Golf club's impressive new Clubhouse. Sponsorship from local, national and international companies, a well supported raffle, and a hugely enjoyable auction conducted by Tony Picciuto, owner of Buongiorno Italia all contributed to the event's financial success.
David Josephs, who helped to organise the event, said "our initial aim was to raise £5,000 from the Golf day, so to go well beyond that is a real thrill. We nearly had to postpone the event given the bleak weather, but everyone got into the spirit of what we were trying to achieve, including all the staff at the Harpenden Common Golf Club. All of us are tremendously grateful to everyone who helped the day to go so well.
