Wheatfields Infants’ and Nursery school is celebrating after receiving a Green Flag Award from Eco-Schools for being environmentally friendly.

The green scheme has three levels. Bronze and silver are self-assessed and the top green flag requires an independent inspection.

The assessment was carried out by Morgan who said “Wheatfields are doing excellent work and are clearly integrating sustainability into everything they do. The school grounds (even on a cold day) were a lively and pleasant place to be, it is a clearly understood learning environment that is well used and continually improved. The pupils in the eco committee were both enthusiastic and knowledgeable: they clearly led the activity and as ambassadors are role models for younger pupils.”

The school has 6 Sustainable Ambassadors who lead green initiatives in school. Recent campaigns have included creating a bee friendly garden, growing vegetables in class gardens, building a bug hotel and making recycled bird feeders to hang in school. The children sell some of the vegetables and herbs they produce to raise funds to buy more plants and seeds to grow.

Caroline Churchill, who is the School Business Manger and works with the Sustainable Ambassadors said “We are delighted to receive the Green Flag Award which reflects the hard work carried out by both children and adults to ensure that sustainability is at the heart of our school Based on information supplied by Caroline Churchill.
