Drinkers in St Albans had plenty to cheer about at the city’s annual beer festival.

More than 9,500 people turned up for to the four day event, which has been going for 19 years and is organised by Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

A record number of breweries took part in this year's St Albans Beer of the Festival 2014 competition, with Elland 1872 Porter coming out top.

More than 35,000 pints of 400 different beers and ciders were sold during the event, which takes a year to plan.

The tasting panel judged nineteen different beers ranging from light and hoppy pale ales through to rich and malty stouts. Visitors could also choose from 58 ciders, and nine perries.

St Albans & Harpenden Review:

Aside from beer there were plenty of stalls to purchase food or beer related memorabilia.

John Bishop, who has been involved in the festival since it started, said the highlight was the beer tasting with Roger Protz, one of the world’s leading beer writers and editor of the Good Beer Guide.

He said: "This year has been absolutely fantastic. The festival really is going from strength to strengths and it has become an all round event for everyone to enjoy."

CAMRA is the Campaign for Real Ale, an independent voluntary consumer body based in St Albans.
