St Albans City chairman Ian Ridley has unexpectedly resigned from his role at the club.

Ridley took on the position at Clarence Park 17 months ago but announced on Twitter his decision to depart.

He decided he was unable to stay on after disagreeing with a proposal by the club’s owners to raise the price of admission to games by 20 per cent.

The well respected journalist wrote on Twitter: “Sadly (for me anyway) I feel I have to resign as chairman and will be stepping down from today.

"Am unable to agree/implement the owners' proposal, agreed by other board members, for 20 per cent admission price rise in mid-season."

The news comes as the players are believed to have been given a wage cut.

What a surprise. New owners come sweeping in, promise the earth, a new ground and limitless commecial activity and revenue, in the expectation that the locals will flock back on the basis on plans and promises alone. Realisation starts to dawn that owning a club might actually involves investing money without a return for a while and that it's going to take longer than a season to turn things round on and off the pitch, and they start to slash anything that moves in a blind panic to stem the flow. We've been there before and no doubt will go there again. Us and how many other clubs at how many other levels. Do they really think that a 20% entrance hike will bring more money in overall? Really? Ian's a football man and we're already worse off without him. Save us from business people who know nothing about the game.

Without these business people, City would already be playing at Verulamium with jumpers for goalposts; at least they are bringing a commercial reality to the club's affairs which football people would avoid and get it into even worse trouble. Personally, I think that the club needs to drop a couple more rungs down the non-league ladder (i.e. Verulamium with proper goalposts) to be at the right level for the finance and fan-base it gets.
