St Albans Bowls Club reached the final of the Jones Cup after a 44-38 victory over Townsend.

Their away team of Alan Turner, Robin Farrer, John Bartlett and Tony Rylands lost 23-16 to Alfie Long, Mike Cowell, Jason Hall and David Day. But the home side of Andy Kay, Ted Salvidge, Ken Harding and Steve Wilson won 28-15 to progress to the final in Welwyn on September 7.

Members played a mixed competition as a tribute to David Gray who was captain in 2007.

The winning team of Brenda Pitkin, Ken Harding, John Cooper and Ted Salvidge received the David Gray Memorial Shield by Doreen Gray.

St Albans Ladies played Batchwood in district triples league. The team of Pauline Gardiner, Joyce Wilson and Tricia Gascoine beat Sylvia Brewster’s side 20-14, and the team of Marjorie Knight, Eileen Englebright and Jacy Farrer lost 18-13 to Liz Schlatter’s side. St Albans edged to a 33-32 victory for four league points.

In the county league the St Albans Ladies’ team of Pitkin, Diana Tribe, Eileen Cox and Joyce Wilson had a good win over Pat Savage’s side from Batchwood 29-10.

The St Albans midweek men played Harpenden in the friendly district league. Harpenden won 81-63 and gained 65 league points to St Albans 15 points. The top rink for St Albans was John Cooper, John Saguiez, Alan Turner and Rod Perks (21-13).

In round two of the St Albans & District ladies’ triples competition, Gardiner, Maggie Kendrick and Doreen Gray lost to Beryl Burbridge’s team from Potters Bar 20-15.
