London Colney face FA Cup replay
2:30pm Tuesday 20th August 2013 in Sport
London Colney were held to a 1-1 draw at home to AFC Rushden Diamonds in their extra preliminary round FA Cup tie on Saturday.
In the first 15 minutes, Matt Newman was twice thwarted by fine saves from Tom Cross to stop the Blueboys from taking the lead.
At the other end Mark Whittamore was called into action when he tipped a fine strike from Ben Morgan onto the post.
Colney took the lead after 34 minutes when Martin Collins sent a superb ball into the path of Spencer Clarke-Mardle, who drove the shot into the far corner of the net.
Just before the break Cross produced a point-blank save from Danny Fitzgerald to stop the hosts from going 2-0 up.
Early in the second half Newman again forced Cross into another fine save from a firm low drive from the Blueboys’ top scorer from the last two seasons.
But the visitors snatched an equaliser in the 77th minute when Joe Merrill fired into the top corner from 20 yards out.
The Blueboys thought they had scored the winner but Cross just managed to get back and stop the ball going over the line.
Colney’s replay is scheduled to take place tonight.
