Saints boss claims side deserved something from Cambridge City defeat

St Albans City joint manager James Gray believes his side were unlucky not to take something from their 1-0 home defeat to Cambridge City on Monday night.
The Saints romped to a 6-1 FA Cup win over Enfield Town on Saturday but failed to reproduce the fireworks two days later as they lost their unbeaten home record in the Southern Premier Division.
St Albans defender Ryan Wharton was dismissed for two yellow cards in the second half and the hosts were unable to break Cambridge down.
Gray said: “I think the first half wasn’t a great display but in the second half we threw everything at them. We went with three at the back and kept the forward players on the pitch.
“We were a bit unlucky not to get something from the game. The lads were disappointed but they showed great desire and we will get them buzzing again for the weekend.”
Gray added: “I was pleased with the way we tried to get back in the game. Coming off the back of Saturday’s good result we didn’t replicate that. But we showed good character when we went down to ten men.”
Wharton was booked for a push and was ordered off after appearing to hit Chris Bacon.
But Gray said: “I thought the sending off was really harsh. The two bookings could have been avoided by the referee and I’m not even sure the first was a free-kick.
“I think we were starting to get on top with 11 men and were creating opportunities. But the ball just never fell for us and on another day John Frendo could have had a hat-trick.
“I’m feeling a bit aggrieved with the referee’s decisions and a point would have been a fair result.”
The Saints have lost to Poole Town, Chesham United and City in the opening weeks of the season. All three teams sit above them in the table and Gray believes his side need to start getting results against their promotion rivals.
He said: “Cambridge are a strong side and they defended really well. They will be in and around the top half of the table.
“We have lost games against teams around us in the table so we need to start picking up points against these sides.”
