Townsend clinch double triumph
12:07pm Tuesday 17th September 2013 in Sport
Townsend clinched a memorable double after winning the Hertfordshire title at the regional finals held in Garston.
Having won the London and Southern Counties competition last week, Townsend went on to face the other victors of the Hertfordshire league divisions.
Townsend, having won all their league matches against local opposition, had managed to clinch the district award, by beating first Oakhill and then Harpenden.
This gave them entry to the county finals where they would be faced with the champions of the north, west and east regions.
In the semi finals, against the champions of the east, Whit Hern of Cheshunt, the two Townsend teams managed to romp home by a sizeable margin.
The rink skipped by Danny Macro, and comprising Dave Houghton, Gary West, and Simon Gilbert, won by 23 shots to 13.
Meanwhile the rink skipped by Andrew Briden, with Peter Thomson, John Godman, and Richard Briden, found little difficulty in their task winning by 32 shots to nine.
In the final Townsend faced the northern champions, Letchworth's Whitethorn, who had beaten Bushey in the semis.
Jason Hall came in for Thomson, but otherwise there was no change to the lineups.
There was initially little between the teams but gradually a few shots gap began to open, with both Townsend rinks edging clear of their opposition.
Finally, and with an end to go, the match was conceded and Townsend were declared the winners.
Briden’s rink won 21-18, and Macro's by 21-16 – a winning margin of eight shots.
