St Albans City Ladies through to semi-final again
11:20am Wednesday 5th February 2014 in Sport
St Albans City Ladies reached the semi-finals of the League Cup for the third year in a row after defeating an understrength Harvesters side 3-1.
The Saints controlled the game from the first whistle and scored early when a long throw from Kelly Hancock found her sister Lucy, who fired into the top corner.
City continued to press Harvesters back but didn't have it all their own way as the visitors broke on the counter attack to earn a corner.
St Albans Ladies were caught ball watching as Harvesters took it quickly and headed home to draw level.
City continued to knock on the door to take back the lead but, with some good defending and St Albans missing some glaring chances, the score stayed level at half-time.
The second half substitutes made an immediate impact as Molly Slade slotted through to Georga Knight who coolly fired the ball past the onrushing keeper.
Harvesters tried hard to get back in the game but City broke their spirit after Kelly Hancock attacked a ball in the Harvesters penalty box only to be fouled and awarded a penalty.
Captain Lucy Hancock stepped up and calmly placed the effort into the bottom right corner.
From then on St Albans controlled the pace and guided themselves into the last four of the competition once again.
