Joint manager James Gray insists St Albans City are massively confident heading into Monday's Southern Premier Division play-off final at Chesham United.

The Saints are one step away from a place in the Conference South after a brilliant 4-2 win at Cambridge City last night. Their reward is a trip to Chesham for their promotion showdown which kicks off at 3pm on Bank Holiday Monday.

Gray, whose side lost 1-0 away and drew 2-2 at home to Chesham this season, said: "I'm really looking forward to Monday's game and it should be a big, big match. Chesham are a good side and they played really well on Tuesday night and got themselves through. They've had a good season finishing second on a high points total so everything's geared up for a massive game.

"I'm sure there will be a big crowd there and I know for a fact that our fans will be there because they're loving it at the minute and we love having them.

"We're going to look forward to it now. We'll have a training session on Saturday morning nice and early, look after ourselves and not get into any situation that's going to hamper us. We go there massively full of confidence and one game away. My heart's beating and I can't wait for it."

The Saints got off to a blistering start at Cambridge as goals from John Frendo and Steve Wales put them 2-0 up early on. The hosts pulled one back but Ben Martin restored their two-goal advantage.

Cambridge scored again but City sealed their sixth consecutive play-off win with a superb solo effort from Sam Corcoran.

Gray said: "I thought we deserved it overall but it was a tense game to be involved in. But that's why we play football. I absolutely loved it and the fans were absolutely immense. The players gave it everything and left it all on the pitch for us. You can't ask for much more than that.

"There was a lot of blood and guts spilled and that's what you need to win play-off semi-finals and we're going to need that again on Monday.

"These lads are big time players. They're playing at this level because we've attracted them here but they can all play at a higher level and that's what we're trying to achieve."
