Harpenden Bowls Club's Linda and David Brooks claimed a 23-16 win over fellow members Simon Burgess and Lucy Ratcliffe in the national mixed pairs.

Nick Muir and Jenny Redford defeated Rebecca Maynard and Danny Macro 26-19. Lesley Tutt and Tony Redford fought back from 20-9 down to earn a 26-26 draw with John Dowler and June Lonergan from Northaw and Cuffley.

The extra end saw Redford remove the shot bowl with his penultimate delivery and Lonergan was unable to draw to win.

In the men’s county team ten competition Harpenden won 93-59 at Rosedale in four disciplines. Harpenden lost by one shot in both the singles and the triples but both the pairs and the fours won by a decent margin.

In the County Inter Club team championship competition played on three rinks, Harpenden eased to a 90-39 win at home to Hatfield.

Harpenden men had an emphatic 53-30 away win over Shire Park in the first round of the National Two Fours. The team of Woodie Donoghue, Ken Murray, Tony Redford and Nick Muir had a flying start and were 11-2 up after six ends, maintaining this lead throughout to a comfortable 24-15 win. The team of Rob Newby, Kevin Brazier, John Osborn and Tom Muir had a closer match up to 15 ends when they led 16-15 but stormed ahead to make it 29-15 when Shire Park conceded.

In the same competition Harpenden B won 55-22 at home against Welwyn. The teams were Rob Peppiatt, John Williams, John Millins and Simon Burgess in one rink with the other featuring Trevor Tharby, Rick Catchpole, Doug Hall and David Brooks.

In the National Top club, Harpenden Men’s B squad played Shire Park. The two wood singles was won by John Williams by two shots. The fours won 27-11 through Peter Waller, George Tutt, Rick Catchpole and Doug Hall.

But the triples, four wood singles and pairs lost giving the game to Shire Park 3-2 on rinks. Other members of the teams were Rob Peppiatt, John Millins, Rob Howell, Trevor Tharby, Chris Poulter and John Taylor.

The ladies top club played on Sunday but lost to Potters bar by 3-1 rinks. The fours of Lucy Ratcliffe, Jennie Redford, Jean Dill and Val Thomson won but the singles lost 21-20.

The triples and pairs, after early leads, lost in the last few ends. Team members included Tutt, Linda Newby and Linda Brooks, Jan Holland, Janet Hubball and Dena Roberts.

In the mixed friendly game on Sunday, Harpenden against Kitcheners, the home team lost 80-69. The only winning rink was Sheila Rider, Vicki Rodger and Peter Hubball and Noel Roberts.

The Wednesday mixed game away at Kings Langley saw the team lose as well on three of the five rinks with score of 97-77. Top rink was Tony Hansard, Val Thomson and Avery Hills.

In the London and Southern Counties Shield on four rinks Harpenden lost 82-62 on three rinks to Herts (Watford).

In a mixed friendly visitors Lancaster Road won by four shots with the top rink being Rob Peppiatt, Janet Hubball and John Taylor.
