A Townsend team booked their place in the county and national fours finals.

After a strong start Andrew Briden’s rink assumed a 14-7 lead but John Godman's team stormed back with 11 unanswered points to make the score 18-14.

Briden’s rink, consisting of Dave Houghton, Jason Hall and Danny Macro then scored three, two and one on the final three ends to clinch the victory.

The unlucky trio who ended up only marginally behind were Alan Charran, Andy Bates and Gary West.

In the Top 10 competition, Townsend came up against visitors Hatfield for the second time in as many weeks.

The result was an 88-43 win for the hosts by four rinks to nil. Briden started the proceedings with a convincing victory in the singles.

Peter Thomson, Houghton and Macro won the triples - despite conceding a six in the penultimate end - and Alfie Long, Jason Hall, Peter Armstrong and skip Gary West were never troubled in the fours.

The pairs - Alan Charran and Simon Gilbert - were held to ten shots each after 13 ends, before winning the next 16 shots without reply.

In the county pairs, John Godman and Jason Hall found the Herts green more to their liking in the second half of their match, winning comfortably in the end by 23 shots to 16.

In the county singles, Briden overcame David Bowler of Oak Hill but only after a hard-fought 28 end match by 21 shots to 13. In the subsequent round, and by the same score, he progressed against Alan Dick of Potters Bar. In the same competition Peter Thomson, at 18-15 up, was faced with an opportunity to score a three and defeat Welwyn's Neil Sharp.

Thomson’s bowl duly clipped his opponent’s wood out of the head scoring the winning shots.

Thomson also progressed in the county unbadged singles at the expense of Martin Barson of North Mymms, the district officers’ singles against Welwyn's Alwyn Challacombe, and to the third round of the London and Southern Counties Lonsdale Trophy at the expense of Herts’ Dave Cartwright by 21 shots to 8.

In the L&SC fours Townsend came up against local rivals Harpenden but managed to win fairly comfortably, by 25 shots to 13, with the hosts conceding after 18 ends.

The winning Townsend rink were Carl Robinson, Mike Cowell, Alan Charran and skip Peter Armstrong.
