Harpenden's Tony Redford booked his place at the national championships in Leamington next month after winning the area final of the senior singles.

Redford had a 21-19 victory over Chris Sherriff of Welwyn & District in the county area final.

Linda and David Brooks also won a place at Leamington in the national mixed pairs. They came through the Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire section with a one shot victory over Rose and Terry Coles from Barton Le Clay.

At one stage the Harpenden pair were 9-3 shots down but came back to square the game at the half-way stage. They had a three shot lead going into the last end and held shot until the last bowl of the game.

Tom Muir will be playing in the national junior singles and the national two wood singles next month. He has to win one more match to be in the Under-30 singles too. Muir beat Steve Kilford of Royston in the two wood singles and James Avery, of Welwyn Garden City in the junior singles.

In the Bob Vise competition, Harpenden had a 102-61 victory over North Mymms.

Noel Roberts won the singles (21-17), Kevin Brazier and David Brooks were victorious in the pairs (21-13), while the triples team of Jack Blissett, Ken Murray and Tom Muir won 37-8. The rink featuring Eamon Roberts, Doug Hall, Redford, and Nick Muir drew 23-23. This means Harpenden are through to the last-four of the competition.

In the district fours the team of Simon Burgess, Rick Catchpole, Rob Peppiatt and Tony Smith beat a Townsend team skipped by Mike Doherty 25-14.

In the district two wood triples, Noel Roberts, Eamon Roberts and Hall had a convincing 22-9 shot win over Potters Bar.

Tony Smith, Alan Bostock and Rob Newby defeated Welwyn Garden City 15-13 and Potters Bar 21-19 to reach the quarter-finals.

Harpenden men beat Harperbury 73-20 in the county league. The team was Noel Roberts, John Osborne, Brooks, Ken Murray, Redford, Brazier, John Williams, and Nick Muir. On the ladies rink, the Harperbury team were successful winning 20-11. The ladies side featured Debbie Turner, Jennie Redford, Beryl Birch and Lesley Tutt.

Janet Hubball, Dena Roberts and Jan Holland won their district triples match against Hemel Hempstead.

Barrie Hills and Hall overcame Berkhamsted 27-15 in the third round of the district pairs.

Harpenden won 103-60 in their mixed friendly against Harperbury. The top rink featured Sue Howe, Jean Dill, George Tutt and Jack Blissett.
