St Albans disability sprinter Olivia Breen insists it is all systems go for the Commonwealth Games after a promising outing at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games in London.

With her Commonwealth Games bow right around the corner, Breen headed to Horse Guards Parade on Sunday for some last-minute competition before heading to Glasgow.

And, while she has been selected for the long jump in Scotland by Wales, whom she qualifies for through family ties, it was the 100m that Breen took to in the capital.

Fellow Brit Sophie Hahn claimed the win in 13.48 seconds but it was far from a wasted journey for the Oaklands College pupil as she came third in 13.84.

And Breen, who turns 18 during the Commonwealth Games this Saturday, admitted it was the perfect run out before she turns her attentions to Scotland and Glasgow 2014.

“The Anniversary Games was really good,” said Breen, who hopes to compete throughout the Summer Series – events proudly backed by long-term supporter Sainsbury’s.

“I had a really good start and was ahead of everyone but then they took over me but I was still really happy because normally my starts aren’t very good.

“I am going to the Commonwealth Games for the long jump so I have a very busy time but it is good. I can’t wait.

“It is my first Commonwealth Games and I am representing Wales because my mum is Welsh so that will be great.

“I just got back from Portugal so I am really looking forward to it and this was good preparation. I am hoping to get a medal but I only started long jump in December so it will be a big ask.”

Also playing their part, as the Anniversary Games celebrated two years since the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, was fellow disability sprinter and Oaklands College pupil Kyle Powell.

Powell came home fourth in his own 100m outing in a season’s best 11.63 and the youngest of the four competitors at 18 was more than pleased with his display.

“It was an OK race,” Powell said. “Looking at the time and the field, I was in the best field I could be with champions here and medals everywhere and I am just the new kid on the block.”
