Harpenden’s Tom Muir finished as the runner-up in the junior championship at Leamington Spa after losing 21-11 to Dorset’s Martin Puckett.

Superb performances over the two days saw the 18-year-old win through five rounds at Leamington to reach the final, beating an England Under-25 international and then in the semi-final achieving a 21-8 victory over the current national singles champion T Bishop to reach the final.

Harpenden beat Welwyn & District 19-18 in the county ladies league. The team was Dena Roberts, Beryl Driscoll, Linda Newby and Linda Brooks. This means Harpenden are through to the semi-finals against Welwyn Garden City on August 31.

Success followed when Harperbury were beaten in the semi-finals of the ladies district double rink. The home team of Janet Hubball, Jennie Redford, Beryl Birch and Lucy Ratcliffe won by 22 shots and the away side of Roberts, Newby, Jan Holland and Brooks lost by one shot. The final is between Harpenden and Hatfield.

In the friendly game against the Co-op Luton, Harpenden won on all rinks, with the top team being Viv Dale, Pauline Taylor and Val Thomson.

Newby and Hubball won their first round match of the district Australian Pairs in two sets against Oak Hill team of Gloria Fligman and Sylvia Hobden. Roberts and Val Christiaans won comfortably against a Potters Bar team as well.

In the district singles third round, Newby defeated Jackie Bell from Hatfield 21-17. Roberts, Hubball and Holland beat a team from Batchwood to reach the semi-final of the district triples.
