St Albans Athletics Club’s Mitchell Dutton won three gold medals at the England youth track and field championships.

His performance in Bedford continued his impressive form this season and puts him in contention for the next Paralympic Games.

Competing in his last major championships of the year, the Great Britain junior international (F38) won the Under-20 disability championship javelin competition on Saturday after a throw measuring 37.53m.

The West Herts College student followed this up on Sunday with victory in the shot put after a personal best throw of 9.78m. He rounded this off with a discus win after a throw of 34.87m.

Coach Malcolm Wallace said: “Mitchell has worked hard over a number of years to establish himself as a potential Paralympic athlete and this year he has come out and shown everyone what he is capable of.

“We knew this year was going to be very important in his development and he has achieved more than we had hoped for.”

Dutton won his first international vest for Great Britain this year and won the javelin title at the World IWAS Junior championship where he set a world record of 39.73m.

He has claimed a series of wins this year including England Athletics Senior and Under-20 Disability titles in the shot put, discus and javelin. Dutton also won the Hertfordshire AAA championships at senior able body level in discus.
