St Albans' hockey sides emerged with 100 per cent records at the PLUM tournament at Oaklands last weekend.

The ladies’ first team was led by head coach Hannah Macleod, back after injury and playing her first tournament since the 2014 Hockey World Cup. They recorded victories against Cheltenham (3-1) and Staines (4-2) on Saturday followed by Sunday wins against West Herts (5-0) and Bedford (2-1).

Highlights of the weekend were two stunning backhand strikes into the roof of the net by midfielder Emma O’Nien and one from defender Tash Humphris. Andy Halliday’s men’s team's perfect record involved an impressive 20-2 tally of goals scored and conceded.

The men beat Spalding (3-1) and Hampton (10-1) on Saturday and then on Sunday ran out winners against Oxford Hawks (1-0) and Norwich City (6-0). St Albans defender Matt Davey led the way, with a powerful hat-trick in the victory against Norwich.

Meanwhile the club held successful open door trials for adults and children and continues its ‘open door’ recruitment of new and returning players at all levels and ages.

This weekend senior hockey begins for the club as a whole. On Saturday the ladies travel to Chelmsford for their first league game, while the men’s first team have their final friendly against East Grinstead Seconds at 2pm.

More than 200 colts will return to the Oakland pitches on Sunday from 9am onwards. At 6.30pm on Monday the club's new hockey development officer, England and GB forward and Commonwealth silver medal winner Ellie Watton, will be meeting young players of all ages at the club and leading the first in a series of monthly youth coaching masterclasses, open to all existing and new club members under 18.

The club's weekly junior girls (Tuesday) and boys (Thursday) training starts at 6pm.
