Townsend won the St Albans and District Club Rinks League for the first time in their history.

The tournament, played out over the entire season, required four rinks from each club to play against all seven others in the league.

Points were awarded for each winning rink and for overall victory. The finish couldn’t have been closer with Potters Bar – who had been winners for seven out of the last nine years, and who were going for a hat trick of victories – requiring a clean sweep against Hemel. As it was they dropped 15 points, thereby ensuring that the trophy came to Townsend for the first occasion in the 15-year history of the competition.

The Townsend midweek team paid their first visit to Batchwood and emerged with a 4-1 victory. The top rink was skipped by David Day, comprised Clyde Martindill, Richard Morgan and Gordon Herring and won 27-9.

Comeback of the week went to the rink of Gordon Williamson, his wife Rena, Cliff Moule and Wally Witham who found themselves 13-2 down at the half way stage, but managed to win 17 of the next 19 shots to record a splendid 19-15 victory.

Robbie Ranstead won the club’s Claret Jug after bowlers competed for points throughout the season. Ian Forster was second while Peter Thomson came third.
