St Albans Hockey Club's ladies maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-0 victory at Bedford to go third in the Conference East table. Celebrating her latest England Under-18 selection, striker Chrissie Horn fired the Tangerines into an early lead, but it was only after the interval that St Albans hit their stride.
Camped in the Bedford half, with defender Amy Kee outstanding in stifling any Bedford breakaways, the St Albans pressure finally bore fruit when an Ellie Watton penalty corner deflection sealed the result three minutes from time.
The club’s men’s team had a disappointing 5-3 away defeat at Cambridge City in the East Premier Division.
After slumping to an early 2-0 deficit, St Albans rescued half time parity through Matt Davey and Matt Street. But despite a third from Ed Hutley, the visitors went down as a result of conceding three second-half goals, paying the price for surrendering too much turnover ball to an impressive Cambridge City side.
This weekend sees both teams at home at Oaklands, where the men take on Ipswich at 1pm and the ladies entertain Wisbech at 3pm.
