London Colney booked their place in the second round of the FA Vase after a 2-1 home win over Baldock Town on Saturday.

The Blueboys have been rewarded with a home tie on November 22 against either Haringey Borough or Northampton Spencer.

The first decent chance fell to Jimmy Hill but his shot was safely gathered by the visiting keeper.

London Colney opened the scoring after 20 minutes when Russell Gallagher sent in a low cross and Martin Collins side-footed past Nicky Stillwell for the breakthrough.

The hosts only had to wait six minutes to double their lead. A long kick upfield from keeper Jack Smith saw Stillwell come racing out of his goal. But the keeper slipped leaving an open goal for Spencer Clarke-Mardel to fire into the empty net.

Baldock responded strongly and had efforts on goal through Tom Dram and Dean Gilbert.

The visitors were handed a lifeline before the break when Sam Doolan was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.

Lee Harman stepped up and converted the penalty to bring them right back into the contest.

In the second half, Dram headed over the bar from close range as Baldock continued to threaten an equaliser.

Collins then had a shot blocked at the other end whilst Hill saw his cracking strike saved by Stillwell.

The hosts were indebted to Smith as the keeper saved superbly from Harman’s fierce strike.

It was an end-to-end tie and London Colney went close through Sam Doolan and Clarke-Mardel.

But the final chance fell to Baldock as only a brilliant Smith save from Harry Holland’s strike denied them a replay.

London Colney Reserves lost 2-1 at Kings Langley while the Blues won 6-2 against Caddington.

Glen Ihama and Chris Griffin scored braces along with efforts from Luke Ossario and Owain Page.

The Fourths drew 1-1 in the West Herts Junior Cup against Tring B with a goal from Mickey Shuttlewood.
