Captain James Tompkins led his St Albans Hockey Club Praetorians team to a remarkable 6-5 away win at Indian Gymkhana on Saturday.
In the final league game of the year, with other teams enjoying a pre-Christmas break, Jean-Paul Vincent opened the scoring for the over 50s team when his smart turn and strike whistled past the keeper’s ear.
A clever near post finish from Ian Knox and Craig Cleaver’s waist height volley saw the Tangerines storm to a deserved 3-0 half-time lead.
Gymkhana hit back with two goals early after the break. It was an entertaining affair in a ding-dong second half with six further goals shared between the teams.
With Matt Leedham outstanding and strong individual performances all round, the Tangerines were always in front.
The St Albans second-half scorers were Dave Burns and two from Angus MacGregor, whose spectacular solo dribble and finish were the highlight of a pulsating game.
