St Albans City joint manager Graham Golds insists his side are capable of upsetting league leaders Boreham Wood and ruining Ben Martin’s return to Clarence Park on Saturday.

Conference South leaders Wood are the visitors this weekend with former Saints captain Martin set to face his old side following his recent move.

Wood have stuttered in recent weeks but remain top, although Golds believes his team can pull off a shock win.

He said: “They are a good outfit and are very strong going forward.

“They seem to have the right balance at the moment and I’m sure that they will be in the play-offs even if they don’t go on to win the league.

“There are some big hitters in the league and it’s very hard to compete with them but we have to out battle them.

“Anyone can beat anyone in this league and you only have to look at our result against Gosport to see that. Everyone is beatable and Boreham Wood will know if they are not on their mettle that we could turn them over.

Golds added: “It will be strange to see Ben in a Boreham Wood shirt and the boys would love to get one over him. Because of our recent injuries we have missed not having him.

“Obviously he wanted to make the move and there was nothing we could do about it.

“When he’s on his game then he is one of the best centre backs in the league.”

City hope to be able to call on John Frendo with the striker recently out due to a back injury.

But the game could come too soon for goalkeeper Joe Welch because of inflammation around his heart which has kept him out of the last two games.

The Saints ended a four-match winless run with a 2-1 victory at home to Gosport Borough on Sunday.

Golds said: “I think Gosport was probably our most difficult fixture of the festive period so it was nice to finish on a high and come out with a win.

“The boys’ attitude throughout the whole team was good. All the side dug in and raised their game so it was the most pleasing win of the season against a good Gosport side.

“We had only taken one point from three prior to that so it was a big victory for us especially coming against the odds.”

Teenage midfielder Jack Green made a big impact as a substitute in the second half and Golds insists he will get a chance to impress.

The joint manager said: “He (Jack Green) was amazing when he came on and created all sorts of problems with his pace.

“In the end the substitution paid dividends. He’s only a young lad and is a good prospect so this will have done him no harm at all.

“But we still have to make sure he keeps his feet on the ground.”
