London Colney battled to a 1-0 win at Tring Athletic on Saturday to move up to sixth in the South Midlands Premier Division.

The visitors had the first opportunity at Pancake Lane when a lob by Martin Collins was held by goalkeeper Jack Hopwood.

Danny Fitzgerald then sent in a free-kick which was headed narrowly wide of the target by Tom Smith.

Collins went close but his snap shot was saved by Hopwood as the Blueboys continued to pressurise Tring.

The hosts threatened through Taylor Collins but his strike was pushed away by goalkeeper Jack Smith.

London Colney had another chance shortly after the restart when Spencer Clarke-Mardel set up James Ewington but his effort was saved by Hopwood.

Tring had the ball in the net when a long throw from Adam Toone bounced over Smith's header but it was ruled out because no-one had got a touch on the ball.

Tom Smith nearly opened the scoring for Colney but his header was saved.

The Blueboys continued to attack and Ewington's low shot was pushed round the post by Hopwood.

The breakthrough came in the 76th minute when a long ball from Jack Smith was played on by Tom Smith to Fitzgerald and he raced past two defenders before blasting his fierce 25-yard shot into the corner of the net.

It was a worthy winner for the visitors and their next match is at Holmer Green on Saturday.
