St Albans teenager Amy Platten celebrated her first appearance in the Spanish European Judo Cup by winning a bronze medal.

The 14-year-old was selected to represent England in the Cadet competition for Under-18s in Fuengirola.

Despite being the youngest in the -44kg competition, Platten clinched impressive wins with ippon (knockout) throws to reach the quarter-finals.

She had the lead in her match before eventually losing to her 17-year-old Spanish opponent who went on to fight in the final.

Platten, who won the British Championship in 2013, regrouped after the defeat and recovered from trailing three and half minutes into the four minute bronze medal fight.

Platten managed to claw back the contest and clinch victory for her biggest achievement yet.

The teenager said: “As this was my first Cadet European Cup, my goal was to win one fight but to win a bronze was better than I could have ever hoped for.”
