Harpenden Bowls Club's trio of Dena Roberts, Janet Hubball and Linda Newby advanced through to the second round of the county triples after overcoming Batchwood is appalling conditions. 

The first three ends were played in dry weather but then the rain started and did not stop. It was neck and neck all the way but Harpenden won 15-12. 

Another team of Jan Holland, Pauline Taylor and substitute Viv Dale won 17-5 against a Welwyn Garden City side who conceded after 14 ends. 

A side of Lucy Ratcliffe, Beryl Birch and Jennie Redford squeaked through in their county triples, playing Marilyn Hedger's team from Hatfield. The score was 15-13. 

Tutt and her group played a Rowley Lane team skipped by Alison Hall and, after taking an early lead, the cold and wet got to them and they lost 14-17.

The ladies and men played District League matches against North Mymms. For the ladies it was a real battle and Harpenden won on one rink 27-18 and lost 14-22 on the other.

Overall Harpenden won by one shot. There top rink was Roberts, Brenda Gilbert Jean Dill and Newby.

The men won by three rinks to one, although North Mymms scored more shots than Harpenden.

Harpenden's win was by a 45-35 margin and their top rink was Tony Hansard, Alan Falconer, Eamon Roberts and Rob Newby.

In the national top club two competition, Harpenden ladies teams took on Potters Bar and St Albans.
Harpenden were beaten by Bar but recovered to overcome St Albans by six shots. 

In the national mixed pairs, last year’s finalists Linda and David Brooks were beaten but Jennie Redford and Nick Muir are through to the next round.

Lesley Tutt and Tony Redford played away at Welwyn Garden and, after a bad start, the duo fought back to 19-19 on the penultimate end. They then scored two on the last end to win 21-19.

Noel Roberts had a very close win in the county officer’s singles against John Bell, eventually clinching a 21-20 victory. 

He was not so lucky in the district singles against Dave Houghton from Townsend, going down 19-21. 

Lesley Tutt won her Officers singles second round 21-16 against Mae Gunn from Shire Park.

In the first round of the national two fours Harpenden, the men’s A team met Shire Park at home.

The four of Rob Newby, Rob Howell, Ken Murray and Jack Blissett were never behind throughout the game, eventually winning 20-13.

The other four of Alan Bostock, Steve Maynard, John Millins and Doug Hall had a much tighter game which was nip and tuck all the way.

They eventually lost by just two shots 17-19 but Harpenden had done enough to win the match 37-32.
