Three Harpenden Bowls Club members have been selected for the Hertfordshire Middleton Cup squad.

Nick Muir, Tom Muir and Tony Redford have been picked after coming through trials. Tom Muir will also be in Leamington next week to take part in the Young England trials.

In the first round of the Tony Allcock trophy, Harpenden edged to a three shot victory at home to Potters Bar. David Brooks , Linda Brooks, Jan Holland, Noel Roberts, Tony Redford, Woodie Donoghue, Lesley Tutt and Janet Hubball helped them to the win.

The other Harpenden team played Welwyn Garden City away and lost 43-31.

In the National Top Club, one of Harpenden’s teams were beaten 3-2 on rinks by Townsend.

Alan Bostock defeated England player Andrew Briden in the two wood singles. The triples team was the other winning rink.

The other Harpenden team also lost 3-2 in a close match with Welwyn & District. Harpenden won the four wood singles and the triples with Welwyn winning the two singles and the fours.

The match then hinged on the result of the pairs. Harpenden pair Colin Driscoll and Nick Muir went ahead for the first time by one shot on the 20th end but were unable to maintain the lead and lost two shots on the last end.

In the men’s County Top Team, Harpenden have had two convincing wins against Abbots Langley and Shire Park. Both games were won by three and half to one half point.

Harpenden started their defence of the County Team Championship with a convincing win against Shire Park.

The team had a third consecutive win in the men’s district league, winning on three rinks out of four against Hemel Hempstead.

There were two equal top rinks of Barrie Hills, Tony Smith, Eamon Roberts and Colin Driscoll and Peter Hubball, Mike Barnes, Gordon Burrow and Doug Hall.

The ladies played a friendly at Potters Bar and prevailed 73-48. Their top rink won 26-5 which featured June Hatton, Mary Fisher and Jean Dill.

But there was a 91-63 friendly defeat to the Kitcheners with the only winning rink coming from Helen Westcott, Tony Marriot, Sheila Rider and Trevor Tharby.

Noel Roberts is through to the fourth round of county officer’s singles having beaten Keith Whitehead, captain of Garston, 21-6 away on Monday. Lesley Tutt is through to the semi-final of the same competition after beating Melanie Obee of Garston 21-7.

In the third round of the county fours two Harpenden teams were playing at home at the same time. One team featuring Tutt, Janet Hubball, Val Thomson and Liz Bradley beat Rowley Lane team captained by Marion Snell 21-14. The other team lost to Radlett.

The third round of the county triples saw only two Ladies teams win. Linda Newby and her team beat Welwyn & District 22-10. Lucy Ratcliffe, Jennie Redford and Beryl Birch also won and they are both now into the last 16 in the competition. The men also have two teams left. John Williams, Noel Roberts and Tony Redford beat Chris Sherriff's triple at Welwyn & District 17-12 while Tom and Nick Muir and Mike Haslam beat Townsend by two shots.

In the national mixed pairs, last year’s area winners Linda and David Brooks lost in the first round to Bryn Evans from Welwyn Garden City and Baldock's Devon Cooper by four shots.
