Townsend defeated Bovingdon in the Team 10 competition after a 70-49 victory.

The visitors had the best possible start when Andrew Briden won the singles by 21 shots to eight. This match had looked in the balance until at 8-8 Briden showed his pedigree, switched on the style and won the next 13 shots without reply.

The fours were the next to finish as they won 22-8. The rink was skipped by Peter Armstrong with David Day, Bob Lawrie and Roger Potter completing the squad.

In the EBA two fours, Welwyn Garden City were the visitors and beaten by a margin of 15 shots. The Townsend rinks were Alan Charran, Andy Bates, Gary West and Danny Macro, who won 22-16 and the top rink, of Peter Thomson, Peter Armstrong, Dave Houghton and Andrew Briden won 21-12; the match being conceded by WGC after 19 ends.

In the Top 11, a team from Harpenden visited Townsend and first to complete his task was Danny Macro who won his singles by 21-12. The match was conceded by Harpenden after 18 ends with both the Townsend pairs and their fours having an unassailable lead. The fours, Andy Bates, Day, Potter and Armstrong won 25-7 and the duo of Thomson and Houghton won 33-7.

In the London and Southern Counties pairs, the Townsend duo of Thomson and Houghton came up against last year`s winners from Barton le Clay.

The match was very tight throughout with one shot per end being traded until the home team managed to edge ahead. With three ends to go and a four shot lead the Townsend duo played defensively and managed to see out the victory 18-16.

The Townsend midweek team competed in a three-way competition along with two other clubs, Mill Hill and Cockfosters, which were founded in 1919. After a slow start on Mill Hill's heavy green Townsend narrowly edged ahead, to be in the lead at half time by six shots.

After tea it all changed with two of the Townsend rinks hardly scoring at all. The final result was a win for Cockfosters by five shots from Townsend and by 24 from Mill Hill. Two of the four Townsend rinks won - that of Gordon Williamson and Mike Cowell who, along with a substitute from Mill Hill, recorded a 14-9 victory and the top rink of Bob Lawrie, Les Perkins and Peter Thomson, who won 23-14.

The first midweek friendly saw the visit of six triples of Hemel bowlers, to a sunny Townsend green. The visitors were highly complimentary about the playing surface, and appeared to settle quickly into their rhythm.

At the halfway stage the home team were only narrowly ahead, but there was still all to play for. The final result was a four rinks to two victory for Townsend, and by 107 shots to the 83 of their guests. The top two Townsend rinks featured two bowlers, both skipping their respective rinks, who had been in the top rink the previous day - Les Perkins and Peter Thomson.

Their scores were remarkably close with Perkins, along with 95-year-old Norman McGlynn and Alan Tucker, winning by 23-9 and Thomson, along with Richard Morgan and Bob Padget, recording a 24-10 success.

The second friendly had the Townsend midweek team in action on Batchwood`s new green and the improvement on the playing surface from last season was obvious.

Although Townsend won by a margin of 30 shots and by three rinks to two, many of the matches were very close. The top two rinks were that of Les Perkins, who with Ian Forster and Alan Tucker, won by 23 shots to 12, and Thomson, whose rink of Morgan and Padget, won 29-6.
