Harpenden moved within one victory of the national mixed two fours finals after a win over Biggleswade in the Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire final.

On a very tricky green the game was always close but after 18 ends Biggleswade led by seven shots. The first to finish was the rink of Noel Roberts, Jan Holland, Linda Brooks and David Brooks and they had reduced their deficit to four shots.

The rink of Dena Roberts, Lesley Tutt, Woodie Donoghue and Tony Redford went into the last end six ahead. They managed to win the last end and won by eight shots. A victory by four shots was secured. Harpenden now play the winners of the Essex area with the victors advancing to the national finals at Leamington.

Harpenden also had a convincing win over North Mymms in the second round of the Bob Vise Trophy to reach the semi-finals.

They won three out of the four disciplines with an aggregate score of 86-55. The Harpenden squad was Noel Roberts, John Osborn, David Brooks, Kevin Brazier, Woodie Donoghue, Jack Blissett, Mike Haslam, Eamon Roberts, Rob Howell and Doug Hall.

Harpenden are also through to the semi-final of the Jones Cup, winning home and away against North Mymms. The away team of Barrie Hills, John Thomson, Rob Howell and Jack Blissett won 20-16 and the home team of Rob Newby, Alan Bostock, Gordon Burrow and Ken Murray won 20-12.

In the district triples Kevin Brazier, Woodie Donoghue and Tony Redford are through to quarter finals with a 19-17 win over Hemel Hempstead.

Doug Rodger, Colin Driscoll and Noel Roberts lost their match against Welwyn and District but won against a Potters Bar team in the two wood triples. Driscoll and Roberts are also through to the third round of the district pairs.

Kevin Brazier and David Brooks had a victory over Peter Thomson and Dave Houghton, last year’s winners of the competition. The Harpenden pair went into the last end two behind but secured three shots for a 21- 20 victory.

Top rink was Mike Barns, Peter Hubball and Steve Maynard. The ladies won on two of three rinks and top rink was Dena Roberts, Sue Howe and Beryl Driscoll.

The weekend mixed friendly against Harperbury saw Harpenden win on three of five rinks and overall by 26 shots. Top rink was Gordon Burrow, Beryl Birch, Tony Smith and Brenda Gilbert.
