Harlequins can go some way to making amends for last season’s disappointments with an impressive showing in the Singha Premiership 7s – according to St Albans-born flanker Luke Wallace.

Quins finished last season down in eighth in the league table – the first time they had missed the play-offs in four seasons - while also failing to make it out of their Pool in Europe.

Later this month they head to the Ricoh Arena to take on hosts Wasps, Northampton Saints and Saracens in Group C in the 7s tournament that will raise the curtain on the new season.

Should they manage to qualify for the finals then Quins will have the advantage of being on home soil for finals day at the Stoop.

And Wallace admits it is about time he and his teammates gave the Quins faithful something to shout about.

“Having the finals day at the Stoop is a good incentive for the players and if we could do well there it would be a good way to repay the fans for sticking by us last season when we didn’t do too well,” he said.

“Winning a tournament in preseason would be a good way to start the year.

“It’s always quite fun and hopefully we can pack it out this year. Quins fans are always pretty good, especially on night fixtures.

“It’s a good chance for the young players to show their skills and obviously there is a bit more space, so the quick guys love it.

“They can show their pace and skills. It’s a good chance for everyone when maybe they wouldn’t in a XVs game.

“I think all three sides can put a team out that would win the pool and I think it will come down to who is fitter at the time in terms of injuries.

“I know a couple of teams have tours around the same time, so it will be interesting to see how that affects things.”

The Singha Premiership Rugby 7s is the only competition this season where you will see the 12 Premiership Rugby clubs taking on the four Welsh Regions.

Twelve months before rugby returns to the Olympics - in Rio - Premiership Rugby continues to lead the way when it comes to club 7s.

The Singha Premiership Rugby 7s will be an important competition and will start a run-in to the Olympic Games when rugby will be firmly in the world spotlight.

And Wallace is confident there will be plenty of scintillating action for the fans to take in this summer, singling out a couple of Quins’ youngsters to keep an eye out for. “If Joe Marchant is fit then he’ll be one to watch as will be Calum Waters our young scrum-half,” he added.

“Calum is just joining us for his first year at the academy now – he’s looking pretty sharp. He’s only just moved to scrum-half, so those skills are pretty raw but he’s got a great rugby brain. He’s a great rugby talent and one to watch as well.

“We’re in preseason at the moment and fitness is the big thing, so the Singha 7s is a good chance to work on that.

“If I play, I’m going to be dying after about three minutes, so it could be interesting.

“It’s a good, competitive way to start the season and compare yourself to other teams.”
